Inscription.

 EAST SIDE

Sacred

to the memory of

JOHN STIRLING

Late Capt of HM 84th Regt of Foot

 who died at Gray Bank Dundee

on the 21st May 1845

aged 70 years

During the course of a long life he envinced

upon all occasions the most lively interest

in everything which he regarded the well being

and happiness of the poor

to him the call of the distressed was never

made in vain

 

SOUTH SIDE

 

His eldest sister

MARY STIRLING

died at Gray Bank Dundee on the 25th June 1815

aged 12 years

and was buried here

his brother

CHARLES STIRLING

died at Broughty Ferry on the 10th November 1826

and was buried in Forfar Churchyard

beside his first wife

ANN ADAM

who died at How Muir

This pillar is erected by

JOHN STIRLING

Late Capt in HM 84th Reg

as a mark of respect to the memory of his brother

ROBERT STIRLING

merchant Dundee

who died at Gray Bank 17th December 1842

aged 72 years

by an honourable course of dealing he realized

an ample fortune

and his urbanity of manners secured him the respect

and esteem of many friends

in his lifetime he was generous to the poor

nor did he forget them in his testamentary bequests

this pillar also points out to posterity

the last earthly abode and exact resting place

of all the other members of his father's family

Aged 68 Years
And was buried in Forfar church yard
His mother
Agnes Farquharson
Died at Gray bank Dundee in 1809
And was also buried in Forfar church yard

His youngest sister
Elizabeth Stirling
Died at Carse Bank on the 23rd September 1784
Aged 16 years
And was buried in
Forfar church yard
