Here are laid the ashes of James Fairweather, a singularly honest and moderately
successful Merchant in this Town. He was Provost, and bore other honours
connected with that dignity. There were none of the Christian virtues which he
did not greatly love, and constantly cultivate. When he died he had lived 68
years. He died on the 5th day of December, in the year 1738 With the ashes of
his father, here rests what was mortal of John Fairweather, Merchant and Bailie
of Dundee, who was held in great respect for his religion and truth, as one who
avoided every false way. He was born 14th May, 1706, and died 31st July, 1760.
