JOHN GILBERT commenced teaching in Dundee about the year 1803,
and continued a teacher in the town up to the period of his death, which took
place on Saturday, Oct. 21, 1848. Although, for many years after his first
commencing to teach in Dundee, he had many difficulties to contend with, yet his
urbanity of manners, and strict attention to his calling, enable him to overcome
them all ; and so popular was he, that, at the time of his decease, his class
was very numerously attended. Mr Gilbert was an elder of a Baptist congregation
that assembled in the Seagate, which office he held for many years in a highly
praiseworthy manner.

The Dundee Courier - Wednesday April 7 1852
On Wednesday afternoon last, the imposing spectacle of a
soldier's funeral passed along our streets, on the occasion of the interment of
the late James Hurle, ensign in the 81st Regiment of Infantry, who died a few
days ago, at 1 Bell Street, of typhus fever, The hearse was attended by the
officers and two companies of the 91st Highland Regiment, at present stationed
in our barracks, and a number of private friends. On arriving at the entrance to
the Old Burying Ground, in which the interment took place, the coffin was
removed from the hearse and borne on the shoulders of 6 privates to the grave,
over which three rounds were discharged by the firing company- Deceased entered
as a private in the 81st Regiment, in which he served for upwards of twenty
years, during which period his uniform good conduct obtained him promotion to
ensign. He was married to a daughter of the late Mr Gilbert, teacher in this
town, During his short residence here he endeared himself to all with whom he
became acquainted, by his gentlemanly and obliging disposition, and has left a
large circle of friends to lament his death, at the early age of thirty-seven.
